A BackChecker contacted Mr. H, a reference for Sonia H.  Mr. H claimed that he only knew Sonia through work at Sonia’s place of employment and through church. However, BackCheck was suspicious of his claim and eventually uncovered that Mr. H was actually Sonia's father.  Mr. H promised to have ‘another’ supervisor call to provide a reference.

During the course of the day BackCheck received several calls from potential references.  Many were discovered to be family members.  Most claimed to have worked with Sonia in some capacity, but provided inconsistent and contradictory information.  Specifically, a mother and daughter, both named ‘Amanda Torres’, called in at separate times to provide references.  The mother Amanda claimed that she supervised Sonia at a daycare. The other Amanda claimed that Sonia worked as a volunteer at church, and not at a daycare.  Lorena Torres (potentially a relative of Amanda Torres) also called during this time and provided a reference for Sonia, claiming to have supervised Sonia at a daycare.

Lastly, BackCheck received a call from another gentleman who claimed to have supervised Sonia at an employer that was not on her resume.  When he was asked to provide dates of employment, he became defensive and audibly shaken. When asked exactly what Sonia’s position was, once again he seemed quite shaken.  When BackCheck asked him for more contact information, he retorted “why? I am not lying or anything!” and then promptly hung up.

The readiness of great numbers of Sonia’s family to lie for her was so gravely suspicious that the store at which she applied chose to not hire her.
